At Spike Island, we strive to be as accessible as possible for all visitors.
There are two wheelchair-accessible pontoons on both the Cobh pier and Spike Island pier to allow ease of access to our passenger ferry. This ramp access is easier to use and less steep during high tide – tide information can be found at tideschart.com, or call our team for advice.
Once on the island, there is a short but steep incline (400m) before reaching the fort. There is a paved wheelchair-friendly walkway from the pier up to the fortress and around the inner fortress itself.
Given the historic nature of the site with some structures being over two centuries old, there are some areas which have to remain untouched in line with the relevant legislation. However, the majority of our exhibitions are located at ground level. 10 of our 12 exhibition spaces and museums on the island are wheelchair accessible. All other public areas, including the cafe and gift shop, are wheelchair accessible, with occasional narrow corridors and doorways. There are fully accessible toilet facilities both at the pier and in our on-site cafe.
